I cleaned out my basement today and found a whole bunch of thank you letters from speaking engagements I gave during the first couple of years getting into the speaking business. I realized I was speaking a whole lot just to get experience and because I loved it so much. You may not love it, but if you want to get experience, get out there and speak, speak, speak!

When speaking, check with your contact – how much time you have – right before you present. It may have changed. I saw a speaker, keynote, in the middle of his speech and when he saw the time card go up we all heard him say: “Really? I thought I had 45 minutes.” The audience of 400 people now knew that someone screwed up and told him he had longer than he thought. He then had to collect his thoughts, skip ahead, and finish up. Be prepared If your speech gets cut short, know where you need to go, be sure to include your summary/closing and do not end abruptly.

Other reasons people may be walking out of your session: they got a phone call or text message that they need to take, they are feeling sick or need to use the restroom, you remind them of their ex lover and just can’t look at you. It’s not your fault! Focus on the people who are firmly in their seats and want to hear what you have to say.

Sit or Stand When Presenting

If you want to sit, go ahead, but make sure that everyone in the audience can see and hear you. I was in a session where the speaker sat at the head table, but the podium was in the way, so I couldn’t see her at all. If you are presenting in a room with a podium, try to move it away if it is blocking you. People want to see you.

Keep this in mind, when you stand you appear more confident and powerful. This is important if you want your audience to have confidence in what you are telling them.

Don’t Focus on Walk Outs

If people start to walk out, do not pay attention to them. Focus on the people who are staying, which is the majority of the people in the room. Give them your undivided attention. Even if the people walked out because they thought you were the worst presenter in the world, so what. There are others in the room who think you are great and need to hear you.

If people walk out of your session don’t take it personally. Don’t even care. You have no idea why they are leaving and it probably has nothing to do with you. They may have already decided before they came in, that they were going to leave at a certain time. Some people may try to go to 3 sessions within 30 minutes and then go for coffee. They want to fit it all in. The fact that they walked into your session, you should be happy. They came to see you. There are several other presenters they may not have even attempted to see.

I was with my bike club getting ready to go on a ride when I saw a man run out of the restaurant adjacent to the parking lot where approximately 75 cyclists were. He went up to every person and said, “I hope you enjoy your bike ride today. If you are hungry when you get back, here’s coupon for our all you can eat brunch.” He saw an opportunity and grabbed it. As a result, he got more business. The more speaking opportunities you have the more exposure you will get and the more business you will gain.
